2016-2017 School Year
5/9/2017: The District 65 Track & Field meet is coming up! It will be on Sunday May 21st starting at 7:30. There will be information sessions/practice during recess at Dawes. Students must attend at least one of the practices in order to participate in the track meet. At Orrington we are doing our Track & Field unit in class so see Mr. Allard or me for a permission slips and more information.
5/4/2017: The end of the year is near! We have started our ABC countdown in PE class. The end of the year is full of fun activities and ends with Field Day! If anyone wants to come help out for Field Day please email me and we can figure out a station just for you!
I am hoping we will be outside for the rest of the year so make sure everyone is wearing their gym shoes and proper clothing in case this weather stays with us for a little longer. As always, if you have any questions feel free to email me!

3/6/2017: We have had a fun filled last few weeks in PE class! We have done our volleyball unit, played some fun games, did Jump Rope for Heart, and even managed to get outside for a few days to enjoy the nice days in February. But now we are doing our climbing rope unit. For this unit the students will be able to climb, hang, and swing during this unit so all students will be able to participate no matter what their ability level. It is a fun unit but we are excited to, hopefully, get back outside soon. Fingers crossed!
1/26/2017: Well it is now 2017! We are excited to start a new year with some fun units. At Orrington we are starting our scooter unit that will lead into parachute and a few other cooperative activities that help the students work together.
At Dawes are are starting our volleyball unit. We are working with balloons to start the unit so that the students get used to performing the skill correctly and they get A LOT of practice using a ballon!
Conferences are coming up. We have them scheduled for the week of February 13-15th. I will be at Dawes on Monday and Orrington on Tuesday, although it might change if I have parents that want to meet on certain days/hours. If you would like to meet please contact me so we can schedule a time!

12/19/2016: One more week until winter break! We are working on the basketball unit at both Orrington and Dawes. We are focusing on dribbling, passing, and shooting but we are also challenging our students with some different types of dribbling and passing skills to see who is up to it!
As always, we ask that you send your student to school with gym shoes for PE class. They can wear boots to school. obviously, but for our class it is important to have gym shoes to ensure everyone's safety! Thanks and happy winter!

10/17/2016: We had another successful week of teaching and learning last week at both schools! We worked on improving cardiovascular endurance and working on chasing and fleeing games. This week we will continue with our curriculum and keep moving forward! It is also conference week. I will be at Dawes Monday from 4-6 then Orrington 4-6 Wednesday. I will also be available before school at Orrington and available other times if these times are not good for you. If you are planning on coming to see me, let me know so I know when to expect you. Happy Monday!
10/10/2016: Last week was a VERY successful Marathon Week at both schools. We worked out the importance of a warm up and a cool down, we talked about hydration and dehydration, and we worked on our pacing to ensure that all students had the tools to perform at their best on our Marathon Day. The students did a great job and did their best and we are happy to say that we believe all classes were able to get their class goal of 26.2 miles! The rain on Thursday made things a bit difficult so sometime this week we will do our official Marathon Day!
9/8/2016: At Orrington we are alternating between the soccer unit and throwing and catching. We have had to change our schedule a bit because of the heat the last few days so we added in throwing and catching to ensure the safety of our students. But as the weather gets a bit cooler we will go back to soccer and work on other chasing and fleeing games as well.
At Dawes we are working on chasing and fleeing games as well as working on our rules and boundaries outside. We have such a big space that we are making sure all the students understand where the boundaries of our class is so that when we start playing more tag games and doing other activities the boundaries are second nature to the students!
We are very excited for the upcoming year!

8/22/2016: Welcome back students! We are ready to get this year underway in a few short days. Please remember to bring appropriate clothing and shoes for PE class. We will be getting active right away so we want everyone to be able to participate everyday. Gym shoes are a must! We are looking forward to another great school year!
2015-2016 School Year
4/27/2016: Well it has been too long since I last posted! This past month slipped by. I cannot believe we have about a month left of school! We still have a lot of very fun lessons and units for the students before the year ends. We will be doing soccer, capture the flag, bocce ball, track & field, on top of getting ready for the field day events! It will be an exciting end to another great school year. I just hope we finally get some consistently good weather soon! Field Day at Orrington will be May 25th an Field day at Dawes is May 27th. If anyone would like to help out please let me know! Also, the District 65 Track & Field meet is Sunday May 22nd as well for 4th-5th graders!
3/14/2016: I cannot believe it is almost spring! We are starting our transition into more outdoor activities and we are using the nicer weather to go outside as much as possible. At both schools we are continuing to work on our cardiovascular endurance as well as our cooperative games. We will continue to work on those things when we get outside. For the next few weeks we will be reviewing activities and skills we have done already leading up to spring break.
2/18/2016: The last few weeks have been fast and furious at both schools! At Dawes we are starting the climbing unit. The students will be doing a variety of activities with the rope, as well as climbing if they feel comfortable. We are really working on their upper body strength as well as cooperative activities during this unit. It is a really fun, and challenging, unit and the students really enjoy it!
At Orrington, we are finishing up our dance unit. We were lucky enough to have Elmo from Supreme Dance come in and lead lessons for a few days. This was a great opportunity to teach the students some hip hop dance moves and utilize someone in the community with the expertise in dance. Matt and I had a fun time learning and dancing as well! Next week we will start the ropes unit at Orrington as well. We will alternate between climbing rope and the jump rope.

2/8/2016: We have a lot going on at both schools this week! First off it is conference week. Here is my schedule for conferences and, as always, please email/call me if you would like to schedule a time to me.
Tuesday: 8:05-9:00 AM and 4-6 PM at Dawes
Wednesday: 8:05-9:00 AM at Dawes and 4-7 PM at Orrington
Now for the class happenings! We are starting Jump Rope for Heart week at Dawes and it will be so much fun! We are jumping and dancing and moving all week! Monday is Country Western Day, Tuesday is Hip Hop Day, Wednesday is Sports Day and Thursday is Red Out Day. Students can dress up if they would like but they do not need to. As long as they have gym shoes they will participate! This is a great way to get the students moving and to think about the health of others on top of their own.
At Orrington we will have a special guest this Wednesday then next week. Our amazing friend, and dance instructor, Elmo will be teaching our students a dance routine for 3 days the next few weeks. He has a great way to get through to all the students and is a great influence on the students. We will not be starting a new unit this time but we will be doing some very fun activities that some students have done before but many have not. It will be a fun filled few weeks!

1/14/2016: At Dawes we are now moving from the short rope part of the jump rope unit to the long rope section. The long rope enables students to do different activities with the long rope in small groups. We have various activities that involved jumping over the "snake" (rope) to get the students used to being aware of their surroundings then we move on to more difficult activities with the rope swinging over the top. We vary the activities depending on age group so that all students feel on target with their peers. We also will challenge certain groups and give them more activities if they are comfortable with the ones that are being taught. This enables all students to be pushed to do something new, if they so choose.
At Orrington we are starting the scooter unit. We teach students to travel in many different ways on the scooter. This unit is an amazing leg and arm workout and we also add in "real life" situations with turns, stop signs, reverse directions, and other normal traffic stops to give students a more "real" feel of the road.

1/5/2016: Welcome to 2016! I am excited to be back after a nice winter break. We will be moving along with our fun units during the winter months. At Dawes, we are starting out with the jump rope unit. We are starting with the skills of the simple rope jump then as the days go by students will be able to move at their pace through different types of jumps. We encourage students to work at their own pace and challenge themselves to get better everyday!
At Orrington, we are going to be mixing up the climbing rope, jump rope, scooter, and parachute units. We will run jump rope and climbing rope together so students are not sitting around waiting to climb the rope. These all are very fun units and provide a wide range of movement patterns and skills.
PLEASE MAKE SURE TO BRING GYM SHOES TO P.E.!!!!

12/2/2016: We started the basketball unit at both schools. This unit is another student favorite and it allows for maximum participation and a lot of practice on our skills. Every student during this unit has their own ball so they are able to get maximum chances to perform dribbling, shooting, and passing. These skills are transferable to many other sports because they work on hand eye coordination as well as team work.
We would also like to remind everyone that all students must have gym shoes for PE! We want to make sure all students are safe to make sure no one gets injured!

11/6/2015: Well the last few weeks have flown by! Last week at Dawes we had the pleasure of having Coach/Officer Walton of the ETHS tennis program come and teach a tennis unit to some of our classes. This is a great experience for the students, and teachers, because they get to learn something they might not ordinarily learn. He has a special way of working with the students and making tennis fun and accessible to all 20+ students in each class. This week we worked on improving students' cardiovascular endurance by doing a lot of different activities that involved running, pacing, and team work. The students have really taken to these games and take pride in trying to improve upon their times/laps from the previous lesson.
At Orrington, we are taking advantage of the warmer weather and starting our basketball unit. We wanted to use the sport court and the basketball hoops outside since their is more space to teach and the rims can be lowered to accommodate the younger students. We will go back to it when we are inside but this unit is great because if gives the students a chance to work on their basketball skills by themselves, with a partner, or in a small group. We bring out a lot of different types of balls so that everyone is comfortable working on their skills.

10/18/2015: Another week down and another week of fun activities completed! We will continue to work on throwing and catching at Dawes and we will add in some different games that give the students a chance to perform the skills in a game situation.
At Orrington we are starting our capture the flag unit. We take a simple game of capture the flag then alter some of the rules to give students a chance to experience different ways to play. The different rules give the students a chance to work as a team to come up with different strategies because of the way the game changes.
Conferences are next Tuesday/Wednesday. I will be at Dawes Tuesday from 4-6 then Orrington Wednesday from 4-7. I am also available before school at Dawes from 8:15-9 and lunch at Orrington from 12ish-1:30. If you would like to see me please email/call me and we can schedule a time to meet!

10/13/2015: Last week was a VERY successful "Marathon Week" at both Dawes and Orrington! The students learned how to properly warm up, pace, hydrate, and execute a "marathon". This all led to the class Marathon on Thursday and both schools! We challenged each group to finish a marathon, 26.2 miles, as a class and every group was able to accomplish it! We always love to see students striving for a goal and seeing the hard work pay off so we were so excited to see them in action Thursday!
This week we are working on throwing and catching at Dawes. We will start with the underhand throw and catch then move on to the overhand throw. These skills are very important because there are so many sports that involve throwing and catching so if each student is able to throw and catch they will feel comfortable playing many different sports!

9/22/2015: The year has started off great so far! We are getting maximum participation from all the students. The kindergarten students are making a fantastic transition and are picking things up very quickly! This means that we can add more activities quicker than usual!
Last Friday at Dawes we had a special guest substitute teacher who taught some very fun lessons. Mr. Kessler, a retired D65 teacher, always love to teach new activities and the students LOVED it. We have been adding new tag games at Dawes as well that have been teaching kids pathways and working on cooperative learning as well. This week we are going to start teaching the younger students about the Fitnessgram testing and practice a few of the tests.
At Orrington, we have also been working on tag games and Mr. T, Mr. Allard's student teacher, taught a very fun game called Doctor Tag that the students really enjoyed. We are also working on throwing and catching using different types of balls.

9/8/2015: So far, at both schools, we have been working on pathways and boundaries. These lessons set up the rest of the school year because it teaches/reinforces our rules and regulations for class as well as teach the younger students where they are supposed to be during our activities. It has been a fun first two weeks and I am really excited for the rest of the school year!
8/24/2015: Welcome back to another wonderful school year! We are excited for everyone to be back and we are excited to teach and be active. At both Orrington and Dawes we will be focusing on the school/class rules and regulations during the first week then we will move on to more activities next week. One HUGE reminder is that all students MUST wear gym shoes to PE class. This is a safety issue. Students are not safe to run around and do activities with flip flops or boots. So please remember to bring your gym shoes and be dressed appropriately for class! Thanks and we are looking forward to having another wonderful school year.
2014-2015 School Year
5/5/2015: At Orrington we are finishing up one of our "experimental" units. We decide to try Jai alia with the younger students and they seem to love it! It is a great game that teaches students how to throw and catch with an object. This game does a great job of working on hand eye coordination that will help students in any game or and sport that involves throwing and catching. We are really happy with how the students have worked together to create their own games as well as practice at their own ability level.
At Dawes we worked on chasing and fleeing games last week and we were going to start bocce ball this week but the weather does not look like it is going to cooperate so we had to make a change! We started track and field yesterday working on relays then we will continue some chasing and fleeing games if we are inside or work on other activities until we can get back outside.

4/20/2016: It looks like spring is finally here! Now we just have to hope the rain does not keep us inside too much. Before I go on about what we are doing at both schools please remember to tell you student to bring their gym shoes for PE! They do not have to wear them all day, just during PE. It is not safe to have rain boots, sandals, or other foot ware that is not meant for running around in. Thanks!
At Dawes we are working on gymnastics. We are working on balances and will also work on different rolls on our mats. Hopefully by next week we will be outside working on different activities in the nice weather!
At Orrington, we are doing a variety of activities. We are reviewing games we did at the start of the year now that we are outside but we are going to be doing some "experimental" units coming up so hopefully they are as fun as Mr. Allard and I both think they will be!

3/26/2015: It has been quite a busy last few weeks at school! We have gotten a lot done and are happy that we were able to get outside for a few days before the weather went back to winter. I guess we should be used to these Evanston "Springs" but I wish we could be outside to utilize our beautiful grass at both schools!
At Dawes we have been working on our scooter unit and students were able to take a scooter drivers test and get their scooter license! It is a big honor to get one of these and the students showed their enthusiasm throughout the unit. We are now working on our FitnessGram testings for the older students and getting practice with the younger ones.
At Orrington we started our invasion games, capture the flag, while we were outside for a few days but once the wind picked up outside we had to change to tag games. Now that we are inside we worked on our climbing rope unit again as well as tag games. But last Thursday we had a chance to work on our Cardiovascular Endurance during Track Thursday! All students did an amazing job jogging and walking during the whole 20 minutes!

3/11/2015: At both schools we are working on our climbing rope skills! This is a really fun unit where students get the opportunity, if they choose, to climb up the climbing rope safely. We, at the younger grades, don't get to the top of the rope but make it about half way up. If a student does not want to climb for any reason they can use a lead up activity or swing across the mat safely.
We incorporate cooperative activities with this unit as well! We swing across the big river (changed daily by students), then try to land on the other side, in a hula hoop, and students will try to get their group safely to the other side standing inside of the hula hoop. It is a big challenge but the students love it!

2/23/2015: February is flying by and I cannot believe it is almost over! Now someone just needs to tell mother nature that Spring is so close. But no matter what we are having a great time exercising during PE at both Dawes and Orrington!
At Orrington, we are finishing up the parachute unit and we will move on to some more fun games before Mr. Allard returns next week! We are happy that his baby girl, and wife, are healthy but we all miss him so we will be glad to see him next Monday!
At Dawes, we are doing step aerobics. This unit really does a great job of working on our cardiovascular endurance and working as a group as the older classes might get a chance to teach their own routine!

2/3/2015: At Dawes, we are still working on our volleyball skills. We are starting the set then we will move on to modified games. The snow day put us off schedule a little bit but we will adjust! Jump Rope for Heart starts Monday so dress up but if you forget no worries! Come to class with gym shoes and that is all that is required. If you have money bring it by next Thursday at the latest. If you are done fundraising you can turn it in early but make sure all the money is in before you hand it in!
At Orrington, we are going to be doing a game week. We do not want to start a new unit since Mr. Allard is still waiting for his baby girl but this will be the week!

1/26/2015: At Dawes we will be starting our volleyball unit! With the younger groups we start off using balloons to get the students used to the correct form of the bump and set. This allows them the best chance to perform the skill correctly and gives them ample opportunities to practice! And we all know that practice makes perfect!
At Orrington, we are going to start different fitness games! We are also waiting on the birth of Mr. Allard's baby girl which could happen any day.

1/9/2015: This week has been a cold one! We are starting the basketball unit at Dawes! The two days off from the cold threw a little wrench into our plans but we still were able to get two days of dribbling. Next week we will work on passing and shooting before we move on to another unit!
At Orrington, we are wrapping up the basketball unit by reviewing skills and teaching some new fun skills as well. We will go into a new unit next week and Mr. Allard is also expecting the birth of his child at anytime!

12-15-2014: At both schools we will be experimenting with new and innovative games and activities that different District 65 PE teachers presented at the Illinois Association for Health, Physical Education, Dance, and Recreation conference. This will be a fun week leading into winter break. These new activities will incorporate much of what we have already taught the students but are really fun and a bit different!
And as always PLEASE remember to send your students to school with gym shoes if they leave wearing boots. It is not safe to run around the gym in boots because of the mud, dirt, water, and other outside things that might get stuck in them!

12/1/2014: December brings cold temperatures, snow, sleet, rain, and inside PE class. This means that students MUST bring gym shoes for PE. They do not need to wear them outside or during the rest of the day in school but they must in PE! This ensures that our classroom will be clean during our class and it makes sure that all students are able to participate safely!
At Dawes we are working on our jump rope unit! This is a fantastic cardiovascular endurance workout. We are starting with individual ropes then will move on to the bigger ropes and do different activities with those!
At Orrington we are starting the basketball unit. We are starting with dribbling and shooting. We are also teaching different skills and fun games. We are lucky enough to have enough basketballs and playground balls that all students are able to have their own equipment which means more practice!

11/13/14: At Dawes we will start our throwing and catching unit. This is a very fun unit for the younger students, as well as the older students, because they get a chance to learn how to throw using the proper technique. We will be using multiple different objects to throw and catch with to get students used to different objects!
11/6/2014: Capture the Flag will continue at Orrington! But this week we are changing the game up everyday to have students think about new strategies and work on different skills. We will use certain soft balls and allow them to throw to a teammate as well as dribble using their soccer skills. We are adding more objects to "capture" so more students can be involved and more strategy is needed. So far the kids are loving it!
At Dawes, we are working more on cooperative games and doing some review on games we have played already and adding extensions to make them different. Wednesday is the Dance-A-Thon as well and students had a blast! They colored their hair, danced, and raised a lot of money for a great cause!

10/28/2014: It's Halloween week at Dawes! We are using the fall theme for all of our activities this week. We have SPOOOOOKY fitness stations, scary obstacle course, pumpkin grab, and a few other fun games.
At Orrington we are starting Capture the Flag which is a great game! This game works on team work and cooperation as well at strategies as the students get older. |
10/21/2014: At Orrington we are working on the volleyball unit as well as the combined throwing and catching and kicking and trapping unit. Students have a lot of options and are encouraged to work on all the skills. We also had some special guests from the Northwestern University baseball team on Friday!
At Dawes we are starting the soccer unit. We will work on dribbling then passing and trapping. These skills are vital to be a successful soccer player. But we are also working on cooperative skills that go along with working as a group or with a partner. These passing and trapping, and dribbling skills will transfer over to other sports since they help work on spacial awareness as well!

10/13/2014: Marathon week was a success! Each class did an amazing job of running, jogging, and pacing themselves on Friday during our marathon. Each group achieved their goal of running a marathon, 26.2 miles, as a group! This week at Dawes we are working on cooperative activities which are very fun for everyone!
At Orrington, we are continuing to work on throwing and catching but we will also combine our soccer skills as well. Students will have a lot of different choices of things to throw and catch or they can play soccer if they would rather work on that.

10/6/2014: It's marathon week at Dawes Elementary!!!! During the week students will learn different games and do different actives that will teach them how to get there body into the best possible shape for a sporting event. Then on Friday each class will walk/jog/run as far as they can in the hopes of making it to 26.2 miles! It is a fun challenge but I think all the students are up to it.
At Orrington, we are starting our throwing and catching unit. We will use different equipment to practice throwing and catching different objects.

On Wednesday, the girls who signed up for Girls Play Sports will go to the high school and be able to go around with the high school students and coaches are learn, and play, different sports. This is a great opportunity for the girls to get to check out different sports!
9/22/2014: At Orrington we will continue to work on our soccer unit! Last week we only had a few days to practice our skills because of bus evacuation drills and other conflicts so we are excited to get back into the soccer unit! At Dawes we will start the week with the bus evacuation drill then move into some more small group cooperative activities. These activities are very fun and they get the students to work together!
9/18/2014: Cooperative activities are the main focus at Dawes but we are still working on locomotors and boundaries. At Orrington, we are starting the soccer unit! We are working on passing and trapping and giving every student a lot of practice time to work on it.
9/9/2914: We are starting our 3rd week of school and are finally getting into the flow of class! We are going to continue to work on our movement patterns, locomotor skills, and pathways for the younger students. The older students are going to start working on different cooperative activities which are always fun and challenging!
8/27/2014: To start off the year, we will be starting off going over classroom rules, procedures and expectations! We want to make sure all students are caring, respectful, safe, and here and ready and that everyone treats everyone the way that they want to be treated. If we can do that then the classes will be able to get a lot more accomplished! We know students can do that, and we expect them to, so we are happy to be back!
8/24/2014: Welcome back students of Orrington and Dawes Elementary Schools! We hope you had a fantastic summer and were healthy and active but now it is time to get back to school for the 2014-2015 school year! We are excited to be back to continue to where we left off at the end of last year!
2013-2014 School Year
Dawes and Orrington Elementary School PE classes will be working on track and field! We will work on different events that 4-5th grade students will have the chance to compete in at the District 65 Track & Field meet that is on June 1st! This is a very fun unit and some of the events are new to the younger students so it is a perfect time to introduce different skills. We are luck enough to finally have Spring weather so hopefully we will be outside the rest of the year! So remember to bring your gym shoes!
