Curriculum Models for K-2nd grade
Skill Based Model
In this model students will practice a skill or certain task that is given to them by the teacher. The teacher has a set of learning goals that they want the students to accomplish. This model fosters high rates of student engagement and practice. Students will participate in a wide range of different activities ranging from basketball skills to hula hoop skills.
Fitness Model
The fitness model helps students become physically fit and gives them the skills and knowledge to be able to be able to practice outside of school. The main components of this model are muscular strength, muscular endurance, flexibility, cardiovascular endurance and body composition. These components are called the 5 components of physical fitness. This model will introduce many different activities ranging from dance to fitness stations that will be taught during the student’s time at Dawes.
Cooperative Learning Model
This model is geared towards helping students work in small and large groups to accomplish a goal. These activities help students work as a team, be accountable of their actions, and give equal opportunities to all students. This model allows the class to feel comfortable working together which will help the other activities throughout the year run more smoothly.
Curriculum Models for 3rd-5th grade
Cooperative Learning Model
This model works on grouping students into different learning teams for a variety of activities. Students will learn about three major concepts: sportsmanship, individual accountability, and equal learning opportunities so all students can achieve success. The goal of the cooperative learning model is to foster an academic cooperation among students, encourages positive group relationships, develops students’ self-esteem and enhances their academic achievements.
Fitness Model
Helping students become fit and stay fit should be a goal of every physical education program. Students will learn about the health-related fitness components (muscular strength, muscular endurance, flexibility, cardiovascular endurance, and body composition) that directly relate to their health. The fitness model will help to train students to develop fitness skills and to value healthy behaviors. This model will also incorporate dance, as it is a great way to stay fit. Students will learn step aerobics, jump bands, and create their own dances.
Sports Education Model
This model is designed to provide students with a positive, lasting educational sports experience. This model gives students the opportunity to learn a variety of sports like volleyball, basketball, and Frisbee golf. Students will learn the skills, decisions, customs and responsibilities that go along with all the different roles in the sport.
